Neelam Kothari, born (March 3, 1968) is a former actress and an established jewellery designer.
Her stint with the movies
Neelam debuted in the 1984 Jawaani alongside Karan Shah. She shot to fame in 1986 in the film Ilzaam opposite another debutante Govinda. She went on to make a regular pairing with Govinda in movies such as Love 86 (1986), Khudgarz (1987), Hatya (1988), Taaqatwar (1989) and Do Qaidi (1989).
Since then she made many other movies in the late 1980s wit mixed success. She is also noted for her appearance in the 1998 movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where she appeared as herself in the movie playing a VJ. In 1999 she appeared in the multi-starrer family film Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United.
Her most recent release was Kasam in 2001 and "Kismet Connection" in 2008.
Jewellery Designing
After quitting her career in films, she joined her family business of Jewellery Exports. She formally trained herself in the trade and joined her father & brother in the trade nearly 10 years back. Today she has a taken it really far having opened a showroom in Mumbai,India under the brand name Neelam Jewels.
Personal life
Neelam's alternate name is Sangeeta Kothari. She grew up in Hongkong and as a child learnt to play the Keyboard and learnt Jazz Ballet for 5 years as a child in Hong Kong. The family has a traditional jewellery making business, making high class timeless pieces for celebrities.
She got married to Rishi Sethia son of a rich businessman from U.K despite opposition and complete boycott from Rishi's family. The two got married in Hong Kong. but got divorced shortly after wards.
Prior to her relationship with Rish, she was dating Bobby Deol. It is rumored that Govinda, her co-star in many films had a crush on her, and pursued her for a long time before he finally gave up and married as per his mothers choice.
She is very close to Sanjay Kapoor's wife - Maheep Kapoor and is regularly seen in the Mumbai Page 3 circle with her other close friends Ekta Kapoor, Sunita Menon, Bhavna Pandey and Farah Khan.
Trivia
Neelam is a name which means blue or Sapphire in Sanskrit and it symbolizes luck. According to superstition in India if the name fits a person it brings fortune, but if it does not it causes disaster.
