Zeenat (Meena Kumari) is the lovely daughter of a minor dignitary in Lucknow. She is secretly in love with a their neighbour, Nawab Yusuf (Pradeep Kumar). Due to a series of tragic mistakes, Zeenat supposedly puts herself in a position to be married to Nawab Sikandar Mirza (Ashok Kumar), who has fallen passionately in love with her. However when Zeenat realizes her mistake, it is too late and the only retreat it to run away. She runs away from the marriage ceremony in search of Yusuf, but a terrible disappointment awaits her. She does not find Yusuf and returns home. Here, her furious father throws her out of the house. In despair, she turns to Nawab Sikandar Mirza' her supposed husband. This sensitively portrayed love-story evokes the traditions of a bygone era in old Lucknow. Directed by M Sadiq, the film is notable for its evergreen melodies composed by Roshan ' including two versions of 'Hum Intezaar Karenge' besides 'Duniya Kare Sawaal To Hum Kya Jawab Dein' and 'Pad Gaye Jhoole'.
